Construction workers need to tread a fine line. Our clothes need to be functional, practical and able to withstand harsh conditions. And, if you're like me, you still want to look slick. That's why I've rounded out the best construction gear for men in the trades. It's a curated selection based on my, ahem, discerning taste. (Just kidding! This is all stuff I've bought myself and worn until it's practically disintegrated.) It's all stuff from Amazon, because I'm a lazy bastard and I'd rather not go to the store if I don't have to. And as an added bonus, it's all wife-approved. And my wife is not an easy woman to please LOL.
Without further ado, here's my list of the best construction gear that will keep you safe on the site and keep the missus happy.
A hard hat is one item that you DON'T want to skimp out on, and in most cases, a hard hat is required for every worker who steps on-site. I've worn this hard hat 10 hours a day, every day and it's sturdy, solid and comfortable. I like that the chin strap tucks away easily and that the material for the hard hat is a bit stronger than other hard hats I've had in the past. Certain versions of this hat have reflector paint which tends to chip away after awhile but it's still a good looking hard hat and it gets the job done.
Price: $42.99 for a three pack
When it comes to construction work shirts, I keep coming back to these. First, it's lightweight enough that I'm not gonna sweat my balls off when I'm on a job, but it's still long-sleeve and will protect me from sharp corners, burns, scrapes and other job-site hazards. Next, it's reflective, which is good for visibility, but they are still black so they slim out my beer gut a bit. Also, the fabric is polyester so they wash well and don't shrink. But you know what? It actually feels good when the wind hits or when I crank up the AC in my truck. Surprisingly, the stitching has held up well, even when I caught it on something. No rips or tears. Plus they come 3 to a pack so the value is there. Are these as fancy as some of the Carhartt ones? No, but you can't beat the value for money. Plus, you can get them in size XXL for my big-boned brothers!
Price: $45.97 - $49.98
My buddy who used to be a Marine in the US Military put me on to these pants, and I gotta say I'm a believer. When I was doing a side hustle doing epoxy flooring and I'd have to scoot around on my knees while grinding concrete, these pants held up great. They're tolerable during hot weather, they don't rip easily, and they come in a bunch of different colours. The only drawback is that there isn't much stretch in the crotch area so if you're squatting a lot, beware. Also, if you're like me and you're always collecting random crap, there's a bunch of pockets.
