A man successfully rescued his neighbor's dog, whose leash had become entangled in an elevator door. The incident was captured by security cameras in their apartment complex.
Johnny Mathis, a 27-year-old resident of Houston, Texas, had just returned from work and parked his car in the underground garage of his apartment complex. Living on the ground floor, he took the elevator up to his floor. Upon exiting, he encountered a woman and her dog attempting to board.
“When she got on, I was looking at the dog, because it was a cute dog,” Mathis told CNN. “I noticed the leash was kinda long but I didn’t think it wasn’t going to make it on the elevator or anything.”
In the 39-second video shared by Mathis on Twitter, he exits the elevator, only to swiftly return when he notices the owner has left and the Pomeranian is stranded alone.
Mathis said he yelled back to her, “hey your dog!” when he noticed the Pomeranian didn’t make the elevator.
“Instinct just kicked in, I just grabbed that leash,” he said. “There was so much fur, that’s why it took me a bit to get that lever off of the collar and when I did, I let go, you could see that leash just shoot off to the top of the elevator.”
As soon as the elevator doors shut, Mathis said the dog’s owner could be heard crying hysterically.
The day following the incident, Mathis visited the leasing office of his apartment complex and recounted the events to the leasing agents. They reviewed the security footage and witnessed the entire incident once more, expressing disbelief that the dog had emerged from the situation unharmed. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
